Zanthoxylum beecheyanum is a widely cultivated ornamental plant native to Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The entire plant emits a strong peppery fragrance. Like other members of the Family Rutaceae, it is favored by swallowtail butterflies which the caterpillars of both Common Mormon and Swallowtail (Papilio xuthus) feed on its leaves.
