Eurasian Otter

Lutra lutra

Eurasian Otter is a Near Threatened mammal species primarily distributed across Asia and Europe. With the assistance of the otter research team from Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, we finally confirmed their presence in the park through their spraints in 2024, and in the following year, we managed to capture footage of these elusive creatures!

Although Eurasian Otters prefer freshwater habitats, they are also found in coastal areas but need regular access to freshwater environments for cleaning. They are active at night to feed primarily on fishes and therefore their spraints often contain fish scales and bones. They are predominantly solitary animals with territoriality, typically rejecting same-sex individuals in their territories while accepting the presence of the opposite sex.
