Litsea glutinosa

Pond Spice is an evergreen tree under the Family Lauraceae. Its Chinese name directly refers to its sap’s slimy texture, while its species name "glutinosa" also means sticky. The roots, stems, and leaves contain a glue-like sticky sap that was used as an adhesive or for hair styling by ancient people. Additionally, when its leaves are mixed with water and rubbed, they produce foam that can be used as a cleaning agent.

Pond Spice flowers from May to June, attracting bees and other insects to feed on its nectar. The plant also serves as a larval food plant for several butterfly species, including Common Bluebottle, Common Mime and Tawny Rajah.
