Taiwan Rock Oak is a native evergreen small tree in Hong Kong, commonly distributed in broadleaf forests at low to mid elevations, favouring sunny and moist habitats. It is also capable of growing tenaciously on hillsides facing the sea. Its leaves are small and glossy, and its wood is poorer than most trees in the family Fagaceae. Due to its scarce wild population, Taiwan Rock Oak has been listed in Rare and Precious Plants of Hong Kong, and assessed as “Near Threatened” in Red List of China’s Biodiversity, making it a particularly precious species.

In terms of ecological value, its densely clustered small flowers serve as a good source of pollen for insects, while its nuts serve primarily as food for wild rodents.
