Aquatic Plants

燈心草
Common Rush
Juncus effusus

Common Rush is an emerged plant frequently seen near paddy fields, pond sides and marshes. In the old days, people used the white pith inside the stem of Common Rush as a good absorbent of oil to light up oil lamps. This shows the ingenuity of our ancestors and their wise use of the natural resources. Common Rush is also used in Chinese medicine, it usually appears as bundles of white ‘threads’ in Chinese herbal packages.
