Spider tree is a common exotic deciduous tree in Hong Kong, originating from other parts of southern China. During its flowering season from March to May, the tree bursts into a profusion of blooms, creating a magnificent spectacle, and is therefore commonly planted as street trees. Its name "Spider Tree" derives from the numerous slender and elongated stamens on its flowers, which closely resemble spiders in appearance.

This tree species has a wide range of uses — young leaves can be pickled as food; timber can be used to make woodcraft; fruit peels can serve as a natural dye; and the leaves, stems, roots, and bark can be used medicinally.
