Alligator-weed is a perennial aquatic plant with hollow stem. It typically grows prostrate along the edges of ponds, marshes, and ditches, and is remarkably resilient. The whole plant can be used medicinally, with the effects of clearing heat and detoxification. It also serves as a larval food plant for the butterfly Grey Pansy.
