What we can see in our daily life is the product of crops, with their original appearance almost being forgotten. Just like the stuffing in a moon cake of the mid-autumn festival, they are actually paste of lotus seed. Rice in our bowls are tassels of golden grains with their shells being removed. What we thought to be ordinary like the Chinese Arrow-head and Water Spinach, can bloom with elegant white flowers. They are all strange looks with familiar names.
"Wetlands at Work" provides you an opportunity to get familiar with these crops, beside those mentioned above. We also have taros and Job's Tears grown on our field. Rather than being consumed, the leaf, flower, fruit and seed of these crops fed the bird and insects in the wild. While getting familiar with these crops, we also observe the precious wet agriculture system. Let's visit the field in the season of harvest!
At "Wetlands at Work" in our the Wetland Discovery Centre, you can observe the crops that we have planted during the Spring Plough. If you are lucky enough, you might be able to see our staff planting rice seedlings and other aquatic crops such as Job's Tear, Water Caltrop, Chinese Arrow-Head and Water Spinach in the fourth and fifth months of the lunar calendar. Hence, you can familiarise yourself with the farming practices which has long been forgotten by urban dwellers.
