Pseudagrion microcephalum

The dragonfly season in Hong Kong begins in early spring. On the green marginal vegetation of the reserve area of the Wetland Park, there is always an eye-catching azure blue damselfly that people won't miss, the Blue Sprite.

Blue Sprite is a medium-sized damselfly. Head and end of abdomen of male are blue in colour. Its body is also blue, with black stripes on it. The female has a similar pattern but being either blue-grey or blue-green.

Life Zone is one of the hotspots for watching the Blue Sprite. You can see them resting on the vegetation along the pond or flying close to the water surface. What's so special about this species? Stand by the pond for a while and you will observe an interesting phenomenon displayed by the male - the territorial behavior. With strong sense of territory, the male always chase after any other male approaching his territory. Similar to other animals, the female possesses natural instinct to be attracted by a male because of his territory. No wonder why the male Blue Sprite fights so hard to defend his territory!

Blue sprite has an excellent vision and alertness. It is difficult to take a close look at them without binoculars as they always sense your presence and will fly away when one approaches. The flying season for this species is not long, so don't wait and just come to Wetland Park now!
