小鸊鷉
Little Grebe
Tachybaptus ruficollis

Little Grebe is common in small ponds with aquatic vegetation. Little Grebe has a dumpy body, pointed sharp bill and buffy brown plumage, and like to swim singly or in small group. During breeding season, their features become distinctive by being dark on back and cap, and rufous on neck and cheek.

Little Grebe mainly feeds on aquatic invertebrates and fishes, and usually dive underwater to catch preys. Their excellent diving skill is not only essential for hunting but also for their survival. Once a Little Grebe is aware of its predators, it can escape from their predators' sight within a second by diving into water.

Juveniles of Little Grebe look different from their parents that they have black and white streaks on their cheeks and neck. It is interesting that when the juvenile birds leave their nest for the first few times, they would stand on their parents' back for a free ride!
