Chinese Pond Heron
Ardeola bacchus
Chinese Pond Herons is small in size with brown streaks on their body and white wings. They have a long beak and legs. In breeding season, their head, neck and breast turn into red wine color. Their back turn dark blue. When they are flying, their white wings and red wine colored back make them obvious.
They always take small insects and other small fish, shrimps and crabs as food. They like to live and feed in freshwater marshes, rice fields, ponds and shallow water. They also like to rest on the branches in woodland and nest in colonies.
The Chinese Pond Heron is a common resident in Hong Kong. However, because of water pollution, the number of Chinese Pond Herons has decreased but they can still be found in Hong Kong Wetland Park.
